When the Dot NET generic domain extension was first started in 1985, along with the first domains on the web, it was meant to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure firms. As there were no particular stipulations about the usage of the top-level domain extension, though, dot NET domains were reserved and used for various purposes and by scores of people. This extension represents an ideal alternative to .COM, notably if the desired domain with the latter domain extension is not free for registration.
